Transparency Center

At Uptodown, we firmly believe that transparency is the foundation of trust. The information we provide here, including the most relevant metrics and context about our practices, reflects our commitment to responsible and ethical operations. Below, you will find real data on how we manage our platform —from app control to community engagement.

This information is updated regularly to ensure that our users, developers and contributors have access to the latest and most accurate details about our operations. We are continuously working to improve these processes and maintain the highest quality standards.

Threat control

The safety of our users is our top priority. We partner with VirusTotal to scan every app before it is published on our site, ensuring a malware- and threat-free environment.

VirusTotal is a free, collaborative online service that analyzes files and URLs for viruses, trojans, worms, and other types of threats. Thanks to this cooperation, we can maintain a reliable and secure app catalog. For more information, visit our page Is Uptodown safe?

How do we integrate VirusTotal into Uptodown?

Uptodown hosts files that undergo rigorous security checks using VirusTotal's detection tools and databases from over 75 antivirus programs, including reputable brands such as Kaspersky, Bitdefender, Avast, McAfee, and AVG (see the full list here). We use its reports to complement each file's technical data, which includes, among others, the following parameters:

  • File hash information (MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256)
  • File size
  • File type
  • Packagename (for Android apps)
Due to VirusTotal's limitations, files larger than 650 MB cannot be automatically scanned. In these cases, our Editorial team performs a thorough manual review.

While VirusTotal provides the first line of defense, our Editorial team has the final say on whether an app or software is published on Uptodown. It is not uncommon for security reports to display questionable alerts that may not necessarily indicate the presence of malware. Certain types of apps (such as emulators or root/customization tools) are prone to "false positives" when interacting with sensitive system elements. Ultimately, our team decides whether to include them in the store. In every case, we link the report to each file so users can review the information themselves.

Developers and quality assurance

We apply strict selection criteria for the apps we offer on Uptodown. Our Editorial team carefully analyzes each app received through our publishing platform, the Developers Console, to ensure that only those meeting our quality standards are made publicly available.

Each app submitted by developers undergoes a thorough review of its functionality, design, performance, and compliance with our publication criteria. Any attempts at identity theft, among other issues, are rejected. This ensures that only high-quality, secure apps are uploaded to Uptodown.

Publication metrics

Uptodown provides a dynamic and up-to-date app catalog for various platforms. Our Editorial team works independently, daily adding new apps and software, while keeping existing ones up to date to ensure the comprehensiveness of our catalog and, thus, offer our users the latest and most stable versions. To this end, we use only official and reliable sources. Users cannot upload apps to Uptodown unless they are the developers or publishers themselves or have obtained legal authorization to do so.

Our catalog is available in two formats: a website accessible from any device and our official native Android app. The following metrics cover all Uptodown distribution channels.

We follow a clear process for handling content removal requests related to intellectual property infringements (in line with the DMCA). All complaints are carefully reviewed and addressed in a timely manner.
